MOTORISTS IN QUEENS(AND BROOKLYN) WATCH EXCESSIVE TRASH ON SIDE OF HIGHWAYS

by:Anthony J Trimboli- Belt Parkway, Queens and Brooklyn- If you are a motorist here in Queens and also Brooklyn around areas like Canarsie, Brooklyn and Briarwood, Queens and other areas in Queens, you should be aware of trash that is on the side of the parkways and you can squash with your tire.

Today, outside of Queens a couple of miles West, on Rockaway Parkway and Belt Parkway Service Road, there were about four beer bottles leaning into the side of the parkway service road where you can turn on to the pier. A NYC DOT worker told me that a beer bottle won't hurt your car, but it can create a flat in your tire.

In Briarwood, Queens, last week, there was an auto body part that was in one of the lanes of the Van Wyck Expressway around the area of Molloy High School where the Van Wyck Runs around the Main Street exit and the Queens Blvd exit. Part of a fender had fallen off a car. AAA says that they do not want to be bothered with picking up auto body parts off of parkways. The NYC Highway Patrol and alert box was working well on that day fortunately and Sanitation and NYPD Highway were contacted well enough.

It has been spotted over ten times on the parkway side medians dangerous objects such as tires and other things like beer bottles that sort of just fall into the parkway that are on the side of the parkway. NYC DOT does not copy the same philosophy as this worker who was out there doing gardening out there in Canarsie, Brooklyn who told me that a beer bottle does not hurt a car and people should not look so worried about that.

New York City and its 311 system which brings out city service workers say that many people have problems with where they are. People tend to have problems in Queens and in areas like Manhattan the most and it is pretty much dependant on where you are, so if you travel to areas like Queens and Manhattan, expect to use 311 more and just try to get out of those areas.

Although the reply today by the worker of NYC DOT was not really to my liking how a beer bottle or a bunch of them rolling onto the exit there in Canarsie, Brooklyn DOES NOT reflect the thoughts of NYC DOT nor the NYPD Highway Patrol, many NYPD precincts will also ask you to let that pass but NYPD Highway Patrol is strict about refuse on the road. What the man said today does NOT reflect the thoughts of NYC DOT in that they think that the public should not be worried about beer bottles sliding into the road and that it would not hurt them; the NYPD has some stations that say this but the NYPD Highway Patrol believes differently.

If anybody has a problem with refuse in the road, perhaps they should not be afraid to talk directly via a phone to a NYPD Highway Patrolman via a yellow phone box that is located on the sides of parkways in I think all five boroughs. THIS PHONE BOX HAS TO HAVE A YELLOW BOX AND A SUNDIAL ON TOP OF IT AND IS A METAL POLE WITH  A BLUE SIGN ON IT. On this box, you get to speak to a Highway Patrolman of the NYPD personally by just opening the box, picking up the black phone and just talking to them. If you see litter going on to the highway lanes from beer bottles to even an auto body part, just pick up the black phone and press the red button on the YELLOW boxes and they will send a NYPD Highway patrolman to you. It is not a regular precinct officer, a Highway Patrolman to you.

Please watch for dangerous litter on NYC Highways and roads.
