If you plan to visit Queens, New York City, NY this Spring coming up or any time recently. Here is a guide on how to use their IMPORTANT numbers around New York City.
911-used only in situations where there is a potential fatality or a strong risk of fatality. Used also only for crimes in progress. This will get you the response there within fifteen minutes and if the call does not fall into the 911 category, you are told either to dial 311 or the operator will automatically redirect your call later in the day to 311.
1-646-610-5000-NYPD General Switchboard- Used mostly for emergency Police situations, but is also used for situations below emergency situations that require police attention. They will direct your call to the appropriate police number. The Police Dept of The City of New York says that this number SHOULD not be used to ask for precinct phone numbers or ask questions that are not emergency in nature. The Police Dept of NYC asks you to use this when you have an emergency that requires the police, but it needs to be forwarded to a specific department.
311-This number SHOULD be used to ask questions and to contact you to any government office that you need assistance from being Sanitation, Highway, etc. It is not a number used to ask questions about Broadway shows or anything like that. It is an official number used for non emergencies.
NOTE: Due to the existence of 311 currently, some New York City government offices may NOT want you to phone them personally since they believe this is the quickest way to get the job done or the question answered. Although NYC government agencies and their numbers are posted in NYC.gov, they may NOT, I will warn you, allow you to phone their office personally because of the existence of 311. However, FDNY allows you to phone their offices personally to ask a question and they will gloriously speak to you or answer your question. Other government agencies will merely tell you to Dial 311 and that ends the conversation. I believe FDNY is the only agency you can dial to answer Fire Dept related questions. They are at 1-718-999-2000. Besides that number, you should use 311 to get in touch with government agencies.
The numbers above such as 311 and 911 are "the only numbers you should know in New York City" according to New York City government as they said before. Again, 311 is a popular number around New York City, so perhaps besides FDNY and fire related questions and issues, you should dial 311 rather than try to contact their office personally in any dept like Finance, Mayor's Office, even some Police Precincts. I believe only FDNY, the Fire Dept will chat with you on the phone concerning any fire related issue. The other depts may just ask you to dial 311 and hang up.
I hope this is helpful. There supposedly are only THREE numbers for you to know here in NYC and they are 311, 911, and the NYPD Switchboard. I hope this is of assistance to any visitors to New York City coming up this Spring or whenever. You need to know only three numbers here in New York City!
