I am writing this as an advisory to drivers from Queens, New York and other areas, including other boroughs of New York City, especially Long Island, New York. I am a writer for this paper and just missed by a couple inches getting into a FOUR car collission today between my car and two other cars and a truck in my neighborhood of Howard Beach, NY close to a school zone in the area by a PS 146 and perhaps an Our Lady of Grace.
What happened seemed to be a deicing malfunction in the sanders of New York City Sanitation. As I mentioned, NYC Sanitation has the image and type here in New York City, NY as being spoiled and laid back and not the types of doing work with pressure attached to it, starting the job at 3 AM just to get it done at 10 AM. This is not really true of NYC Sanitation where I live here in Howard Beach, Queens or some other areas throughout the city--they are not this way here in New York City.
In my community today, somehow a sander on a perfectly clean road this morning after a snow storm last night must have malfunctioned. The ice before an intersection really interfered with the braking on my car and you would not believe how scary it could be or feel that you are now going past and totally into a crosswalk because you have the brake under control, but all your car is doing is skidding or ice skating on the street. Again, the streets around the area besides this one patch were beautiful, so I assume, perhaps, a sander failed???
Well, again, it is acary when you almost slide into three other vehilces, one being a truck because all your car is doing is just like being on an ice skating rink or just skating, but you do have the wheel and the brake under control and your car has stopped but is remaining at like 5 mph.
In Queens, NY especially or any other area, this may include you, please watch the ice patches that are on the roads. I presume here the problem may have been the sander.
I did speak to an operator with the call alarm system and she said she would just have a car circle around the area later in the day and put another sander around, which they certainly did with NYC Sanitation in my area--again, NYC Sanitation is not as they describe it as being spoiled and nasty people who just want to be lazy as described in papers and news, etc. So, I believe all the call box operator did was send the NYPD car past and then they suggested perhaps another sander to be sent around, making the streets around here beautiful and clear.
Again, if you live in The City of New York, you CAN use a call alarm or emergency box on the street if you are in a situation which involves DANGER in some way. Today, for certain, it did. Use the pull level that most would pertain to the incident today, which most likely would be POLICE. I do not know really if Fire in NYC could help, but they do have those little things that may be able to get right there and melt the ice, but it was not an accident, so let us save those. I hit no three other cars. Again, The City of New York, NY grants you the privelage and the right to use a call alarm box mostly on the street to report a DANGER on the street from a very bad pot hole where your car can not get out of to your car slamming into tires in the road, etc. NYC does grant this to you.
