by:Anthony J Trimboli- Queens, New York was by far hit the hardest with the snow storm the last week where we got lots of snow in various areas. As usual, Queens will get about five inches where other areas will get like two inches or something like that.
One of the saddest parts I noticed in Queens, New York recently is that part of it was ignored in terms of shoveling and scraping ice off the subway platforms. As a reporter for this paper, I took a horrible fall in the Rockaways at one of their subway stations because the station manager did not de-ice the station platform for the passengers. I fell right on my side, but both the operator of the shuttle train of NYC Subways and the woman in the booth downstairs were both very attentive and listened. I was OK.
Besides my fall at the subway station, you have lots of areas of Queens which are still trying to get out of the storm. New York City Sanitation did a marvelous job on the roads in the area, but they did not shovel out the back roads. Now, finally the back roads are starting to de ice. At one point, the major roads in Queens were superbly clear and the back roads were like an ice skating rink.
A neighbor of Howard Beach told me when he was trying to park his Chevy Blazer on one of the side streets that it was like parking it on an ice skating rink and gave a dirty look all around. You could see the man enter into the side street with his tires skidding and the car sliding and he was mad at how Sanitation did not do the side streets. Just what a man needs after coming home from work. He was not happy.
One part about Queens this year when it came to the snow is that it seemed ignored a little. That was just one problem.
Besides that, mother nature hit it hard.
