by:Anthony J Trimboli- Bayside/Fresh Meadows, NY- People often say Eastern Queens is an area where nothing is around, you have nothing around and everything is away. Currently, in Queens, lots of the people are away too and are out another one of the five boroughs at this time. But, forgetting the people, people often criticize Eastern Queens as being an area that is often too much out of the way for many people. I would presume this is why trillions of people on Long Island and Queens board the trains in droves to head off to Manhattan rather than just be bored, laying around the house each day.
Whether or not once would consider this a waste, there are two supermarkets up Francis Lewis Boulevard that are run by Waldbaum's. I could not believe how both supermarkets are like five minutes apart. Again, one may call it wasteful and perhaps an observation that one may not be interested in.
People often complain in certain areas about a three mile walk to get to the local supermarket where areas like Forest Hills, Queens and Rego Park, Queens and even areas like Sunnyside, New York and Astoria, New York have it right there. But, this is so unique out here on Francis Lewis Blvd to have two Waldbaum's back to back on Francis Lewis Blvd.
I know Eastern Queens also can be a heavily industrialized area like Long Island where lots of the people that have to remain out there have blue collar jobs out there and funny enough, their wife may have to take the train every day to Manhattan not for leisure or entertainment, but for work. Where the man stays back and does the brick work, the wife has to travel out to Manhattan, not for leisure(a good amount go out there for leisure and can overcrowd the trains)but for work. Again, Eastern Queens does not interest me for its focus on civil service and for a focus on blue collar work. They could be all the way out there and even out of county, and want to hold a prestigious civil service job in Manhattan. I thought it would be the other way around where Western Queens would be more into New York City--but that is not all blue collar and not only civil service oriented people live there.
As you can see, maybe Eastern Queens and Long Island might be too much on the blue collar side for me, even in terms of focus on their job and their life, but what kind of service is that--it is almost astounding to have two supermarkets of the same chain on Francis Lewis Blvd like five minutes away.
I think the thought or reason I stated above may be the reason for this. The areas in Eastern Queens can have a high relativity to blue collar work and to civil service, but it is remarkable to have two supermarkets in one location, five minutes away, run by Waldbaum's.
Again, it has to do with the stock of people out there. You have the blue collar professional in the area. I think that is one big contribution to seeing Waldbaum's like this.
